Toronto Waterfront half marathon - Sunday 30th September 2007 (full results) |
Report by Emily Tredoux
I ran the Toronto Waterfront half marathon on Sept 30th, 2007. My time was 2:01:07. There weerr 5300 in the race.
The race started at 7:00 am just as the sun was coming up, glad I remembered my sunglasses. By 8:00am the weather was already heating up (by noon it was approx 32 degrees). The course was down town Toronto roads, built up and looking delapidated for the first 30 mins, then the waterfront came into view, wow! There were people on yachts cheering us on.....very cool. Along the route there were organised cheering crowds and local bands from each of the ethnic quarters.
I'd set out at the pace I wanted to sustain for the entire race, determined to finally beat that magic 2hr marker. I got cramp at just over 1/2 way so took a minute to stretch the leg out (having torn a calf muscle at the Sheffield 1/2 marathon) not risking injury this time..... Continued to the finish, I could see the clock ticking down the time, NOOooooo....2:02:45, 46, 47......
Later got the results from the website my chip time was 2:01:07.
Maybe next race I will beat the 2hr marker, in the bright side I beat my PB by 9min.

Tens of thousands of "fun runners raising money for their favourite charity", according to Brendan Foster. More T.V. coverage than the average premiership game. Just like the London marathon then! |

This race took place at Apperley Bridge, near Bradford. The first two miles were relentlessly uphill on small country lanes, then it levelled off along the main road into Horsforth before dropping down onto canal towpaths and a nice flat finish in the grounds of Woodhouse Grove School. |

The first 4 miles was uphill and into the teeth of a strong wind. After an undulating mile the next 3 miles were downhill with an undulating couple of miles to finish; not a good course for p.b.s as only 5 ruuners finished under the hour and just 40 runners finished under 70 minutes. There were 317 finishers. |

A fast flat road race somewhere in Lincolnshire on a ferociously hot day. The race was won in a decent 26:45 but what was Zara Hyde-Peters, UK Athletic's Director of Athlete Development, doing there amongst the 60 finishers? |

Graves Park 5km - Wednesday 25th July 2007 |
12 runners competed in this low key club 5km race in Graves Park on a fine evening. The course was once round the paths of the park including the steep path down to - and back up from - Woodseats. The distance was approximately 5km, although the concensus was that it was a couple of hundred metres shortof the advertised distance. The race was preceded by the childrens race. |

Report by Pete Brown
An undulating, rural, course with much of it run on the pavement due to safety considerations with a footbridge thrown in too. The 'significant' incline at nine miles reinforced that this was not a fast track but still no excuse for my worst half marathon clocking since 1988! That this time warranted 13th place out of 612 finishers (and 3rd M40) is a savage indictment of the state of road running today with the race won in only 80:33. I feel sorry for the organisers myself but a soft target for those who fance a bit of pothunting next year. |

Barlow 10km - Friday 13th July 2007 |
The course of this low key race was changed from that of previous years because the part of the traditional course which is off road had completely eroded as a result of the floods of the previous month and had become impassable. The new course not only had more climbing in it (hard to believe but true) but seemed to be a long 10km too. The results below are as published but take no account of the fact that the six runners who were in positions 2 - 7 after four miles missed a crucial turn and took the scenic way back to the finish. It appears that the marshal arrived late and the leading runner took the correct turn without the aid of the marshall, but that the next six runners continued straight on only realising something was amiss when they came to a series of stiles and fields! Strider John Crook, who was in second place until the spot where the missing marshal should have been, had 8.5 miles on his GPS when he finally approached the finish from the wrong direction. Strider Colin West was the first runner to benefit from the presence of the marshal! The unofficial positions are in brackets. |
