South Yorkshire Cross Country League - Archive Results Page
The South Yorkshire X-Country League consists of a series of four cross country fixtures and is organised by the South Yorkshire Athletics Association. The fixtures are held on Sundays during the autumn and winter months. The series is only open to members of running clubs in the South Yorkshire area. Entry is through the clubs. Race numbers are collected prior to, or on the night of, your first race of the series from the club road secretary (please arrive early for the first race - there may be a queue!) and then the same number is kept for the remaining races. Competitors can do as many or as few of the 4 races as they wish. There are seperate races for the juniors, women and men. The mens races are usually approx 10km (8km at the first fixture) and the womens races approx 6km (5km at the first fixture). The distances for the junior races are in line with the maximum allowed for each age group.
The individual League awards are made on the basis of the best 3 positions out of the 4 races, with the final race being a compulsory counter.
There are separate awards in League and Championships for all age groups. The O/65 vet men run with the Senior / Vet Ladies but can still register as a senior and do the 10km race if they prefer. There are separate awards in League and Championships for all age groups.
As with all other SYCAA competitions, competitors must now be first claim for a South Yorkshire affiliated club to qualify for awards and count for teams. Traditionally the races have been very popular with runners of all abilities within all local clubs and Striders have been well represented over the years. The atmosphere at all races is very friendly even given the obvious inter club rivalry.

2012 season 1st fixture. High Melton, Doncaster. Sunday 21st October 2012 (full results) |
A new venue for this season. Plenty of short, sharp hills together with long grass in parts made this a very challenging course. Being the opening fixture, both races were shortened slightly. There were 164 runners in men’s race, won by Meles Okbazghi (Sheffield RC) in 25:58. There were 85 women in the women’s race, won by Stephanie Burns (Rotherham Harriers) in 16:41. |

2012 season 2nd fixture. Wentworth Castle, Barnsley. Sunday 11th November 2012 (full results) |
This year's race in the grounds of Wentworth Castle was held in glorious winter sunshine (in contrast to the fog of last year). Conditions underfoot were surprisiongly firm given the recent heavy rain. Each lap of the castle grounds consisted of long descents and one big climb over bumpy fields. The runners looped past a pond, an architectural folly and a herd of deer trying their best to distance themselves from the runners. There were 158 runners in men’s race, won by Meles Okbazghi (Sheffield RC) in 31:50. There were 101 women in the women’s race, won by Stephanie Burns (Rotherham Harriers) in 24:16. |

2012 season 3rd fixture. Winterhill, Kimberworth, Barnsley. Sunday 25th November 2012 (full results) |
Following heavy rain (and floods in other parts of the country) in the days leading up to this race, it was anticipated that the course would be a mud bath. In reality the ground was reasonably firm with only a few muddy patches. The course itself was subject to an early morning amendment when the organisers arrived to find one part of the planned course fenced off and no key holder present as promised. Congratulations to Race Organiser Pete McCloud for keeping the show on the road at such short notice. The weather on the day was cold but sunny. There were 123 runners in men’s race, won by Robert Little (Hallamshire Harriers) in 30:35. There were 80 women in the women’s race, won by Stephanie Burns (Rotherham Harriers) in 22:44. |

2012 season 4th fixture. Mount St Mary's, Spinkhill. Sunday 9th December 2012 (full results) |
If anybody tells you that a cross country course is "traditional" then beware. Mud (although admittedly nowhere near the insanity of the Nationals last season), hills and really steep hills together with gale force winds meant that this was a challenge for the entire race. Uncertain of distance, times irrelevant the only point of cross country being to beat the person in front of you for the sake of your team. Having said that, this was brilliant conditioning work even if you never get anywhere near to troubling the scorers. This race combined the final league race of the season with the championship race. Congratulations to Carol Beattie, third in the Female Vet O/55 champs race and Dave Parry, third in the Male Vet O/60 race. There were 138 runners in men’s race, won by Mehres Okbhagzi (Sheffield Running Club) in 33:34. There were 89 women in the women’s race, won by Jilly Ingham (Rotherham Harriers) in 25:29.
Striders gained promotion back into division one after a year in division two! |

2011 season 1st fixture. Clifton Park, Rotherham - Sunday 23rd October 2011 (full results) |
This was the first time a cross country league fixture had been held here for many years and the lovely autumn day, ideal for racing, (very firm ground underfoot) showed it off well. However, the course wasn’t the easiest – all uphill slog and downhill charges with hardly any flat in between. There was a particularly sharp little hill right near the end of each circuit. Being the opening fixture, both races were shortened slightly. A good turn out from Striders who are challenging to stay in the top division after being promoted last year. There were 142 runners in men’s race, won by Rob Baker (Hallamshire) in 26:56. There were 96 women (the highest turn out for 12 years) in the women’s race, won by Poppy Blake (University of Sheffield) in 18:16.

2011 season 2nd fixture. Wentworth Castle, Barnsley - Sunday 13th November 2011 (full results) |
Compared to the first fixture, this event took place in conditions more commonly associated with cross-country racing: a misty, damp day with wet ground underfoot. Each lap of the castle grounds consisted of long descents and one big climb over bumpy fields. The runners looped past a pond, an architectural folly and a herd of deer hiding in the woods. Another fantastic turnout from Striders and a particularly fine performance from Daniel Claus. There were 156 runners in men’s race, won by Andy Thake (Hallamshire) in 32:56. Exactly 90 runners contested the women’s race, won by Poppy Blake (University of Sheffield) in 21:26. |

2010 season 2nd fixture. Northern Racing College, Doncaster - Sunday 7th November 2010 (full results) |
This was another glorious day for X-Country racing: lots of winter sunshine and very little wind. This was the first time that one of the cross country fixtures had been held at venue and it turneds out to be an excellent choice by the organisers: rolling countryside, firm underfoot despite the recent rain and plenty of parking nearby. and a challenging course. |

2010 season 3rd fixture. Campsall Park, Doncaster - Sunday 28th November 2010 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
I don't know what others thought about the sub-zero temperatures but frozen ground, instead of the usual mud, meant that this was my fastest time on this course for years even if it was under the advertised 10km. On Saturday, the SYCAA website said that there was no reason why the fixture shouldn't go ahead; the hardest part was de-icing the motor in -6C temperatures. Whilst gloves and Helly may have been the order of the day for some, the sun shone and the ground, just about, took a spike.

2010 season 4th fixture. Winterhill, Kimberworth - Sunday 16th January 2011 (full results) |
Report by Dave Parry
This was the re-arranged final South Yorkshire race of the season; the course on the original date in December was snow bound. It was a very good turn out for the Striders men, encouraged by the prospects of gaining promotion to division one of the league. If we can keep this up next season no guessing where Striders might finish up! Striders duly won promotion and, for a while at least, also won third place (with medals) for the Championship Team Awards. We were later demoted to fourth due to some dodgy arithmetic! Dave Ansell came second in the league and Championship in the male vet O/50 category and Carol Beattie won first prize in the league and Championship in the women vet O/50 category. The Winterhill race was won by John Rocke for Hallamshire in a time of 32:22. Individual Striders results on the day were:

2009 season 1st fixture. Winterhills, Kimberworth - Sunday 25th October 2009 (full results) |
The biggest turn out from Striders in the South Yorkshire X-Country League for some years tackled the hilly but dry 8km course at Winterhills. Living up to its name the course was as windy as ever - is it windy even on a warm still day? As in recent years the course was shortened for the opening race of the season. |

2009 season 2nd fixture. Longley Park, Sheffield - Sunday 8th November 2009 (full results) |
|
The Striders team tent was busy in the minutes prior to the start of this race - and that was just with Striders. It seemed that half the field was huddled in our tent as the rained lashed down. Luck would have it that by far the wettest day of the year was also the Sunday nearest to Remebrance Day, so a minutes silence was in order as the runners lined up in the rain for what was to turn out to be a mud bath. The big turn out of Striders in the mens race were rewarded 10 minutes into the race when the rain abatted and the sun came out. Simon Bennett led the Striders home, but further down the field there was keen competition with 3 clusters of Striders having their own private battles. Pictured left: one pair of muddy Striders legs after the race! |

The second South Yorkshire X-Country race of the 2008 season was nearer the full distance, though still short of 10km. There was the usual biting wind we have come to associate with this venue, though the rain did stop just in time for the start of the mens race. A minute silence was observed before the race for Remembrance Sunday. Mike Savage was d.n.f. |

2008 season 3rd fixture. Campsall Country Park, Doncaster - Sunday 23rd November 2008 (full results) |
This was the archetypical cross country course: firm parts, shingle path, slippy fields and lots and lots of mud!!! Even the weather, which threatened snow earlier in the day, changed in to crisp winter sunshine by the time the mens race started. Times were generally 3 or 4 minutes down on race 2 even though the advertised distance was the same 9km. Although the photos below are not of Striders they perfectly illustrate the muddy conditions.

South Yorkshire League 2008 - Overall positions |
The League results are based on the two best positions from the first three races, plus the position in the final race. Should there be a tie for any position in the final league results, then the tiebreaker will be the position at the final race. Onlu three Striders completed the series. Overall Striders came 11th team out of 22 teams in South Yorkshire, 8 of which form division one - so we came 3rd in division two one place below Penistone who were promoted to division one for next year. 2007 season 1st fixture. Norfolk Park, Sheffield - Sunday 21st October 2007 (full results) |
The first South Yorkshire X-Country race of the 2007 season was held on a beautifully sunny day in mid-October. The Norfolk Park course is one of the tougher races on the local cross country circuit. This year's course was based on the Striders course of two years ago but with a couple of extra climbs per lap. The race was organised by Hallamshire Harriers. The course was part grassland and part woodland; undulating but not too hilly. As in recent years the first race of the series was shorter than the rest with men's race approx 8km and the women's race approx 5km. 2005 season 2nd fixture. Graves Park - Sunday 6th November 2005 |
The second South Yorkshire X-Country race of the 2005 season was held in Graves Park, Sheffield on a very wet morning. The ground was waterlogged from several days heavy rain prior to the day and it was still raining hard for the junior races. The rain had eased off by the time the senior races got under way but the ground was by then both waterlogged and nicely churned up: a typical cross country course, in fact. The men's race was approx 9km and the women's race approx 6km. Striders results are below. The full results can be found on the South Yorkshire X-Country website. |

2005 season 3rd fixture. Hayfield Ponds - Sunday 27th November 2005 |
The third South Yorkshire X-Country race of the 2005 season was held at Hayfield Ponds near Doncaster. Despite the doom-and-gloom weather forecasting in the media in the week leading up to the race, the weather on the day turned out to be typical weather for mid-November - dull with a light, cold breeze and some weak sunshine.(The photos below reveal three Striders wearing gloves and one with gloves and a hat!!) The course was fairly firm considering the rain in the proceeding weeks leading to some relatively fast times. The men's course was nearer 11km than 10km and the women's race approx 6km. Striders results are below. The full results can be found on the South Yorkshire X-Country website. |

2005 season 4th fixture. Penistone - Sunday 8th January 2006 |
The 2005 South Yorkshire Championship Race (and final league fixture) was held on a bitterly cold day at Penistone. The course was a real tester: it was long, muddy and the short, sharp hills were real lung busters! The full results can be found on the South Yorkshire X-Country website. |
