Edale Skyline Fell Race (21.1 miles / 4,505') - Sunday 25th March 2013 (full results)
The sun shone for the re-arranged Edale Skyline, which in March had to be postponed as it was nigh on impossible to get through the snow to Edale, let alone get runners and marshals up onto the fells. DPFR and in particular race organiser Ian Fitzpatrick deserve huge thanks for all their hard work to run the race in September, hence ensuring that all six races in this year’s English Championships were completed. Simon Bailey (Mercia) won, just ahead of Rob Hope (Pudsey and Bramley), and so sealed his first place in the championships. The first woman was Victoria Wilkinson (Bingley). 270 finished, among them five Striders. James Fletcher and Phil Howson led at Win Hill, and descended to the Cheshire Cheese as if this was a summer six miler. Andy Buck and Helen Calder hauled them in across Brown Knoll, and then Helen stormed ahead with a great finishing six miles or so. Chris Moran just held James at bay to finish third Strider. A great race in perfect conditions. 2014’s event is on 23 March, with entries open from 1 February.  It would be good to see more Striders take on this classic challenge.

City to Surf 12km, Perth, Australia - Sunday 25th August 2013 (full results)
In West Australia in recent years there has been a boom in running/walking as a way of keeping fit. Hence this event has grown from under 500 runners 20 years ago to over 48,000 this year. The event now incorporates a marathon, a half marathon, a 12km run, a 12km walk, a 4km run and a 4km walk. One Strider on his travels was amongst the 15,078 completing the classic 12km run from the city centre to the city beach. The weather in the lead up to the race was unseasonally warm at 26+ degrees and bright sunshine (its winter in Australia in August of course). Thankfully the day of the race dawned with english style weather - overcast with a spot or two of rain in the air, a light breeze and 15 degrees, perfect for racing. The course was undulating and along wide roads so no bunching after the first 100 yards. One interesting feature of the event was that the cost of the race number included all local transport within a 50km radius (as did the cost of a Aussie rules football match that also attended whilst down under) - something that should be adopted more often with big events in England. This proved so popular that tarvelling on the local trains to the start was standing room only and very very cosy! The finish area was the size of Hillsborough Park and was covered with marquees each with barbeques and beer - an event with style then. The winner of the 12km race was Harry Summers (Yes Loans Perth RunBirds) in a time of 36:54.

Gritstone Tryal (15.5 miles) - Sunday 28th July 2013 (full results)
Report by Andy Buck

This is a little gem of an event. It is run from the tiny village of Flash in north east Staffordshire. It is a point to point navigation event over about 15.5 miles. The first half was along track, small tracts of moorland and farm fields. The second half took in Axe Edge Moor to the west of the A53. At checkpoint two I was four minutes adrift of the three leaders. At checkpoint three I was two minutes ahead of two of these leaders, and for a while two other runners and I were running in a strong second place! We were overhauled, but it was good to get the navigation right. The winners were Tom Bush (Altrincham) in 1:50:22 and Kerry Marchant (Staffs Moorlands AC) 2:04:35. There were 37 finishers.

City of Manchester 10km - Sunday 14th July 2013 (full results)
The consensus was that this course was long (10.3km). There was a shambolic start on the track where some people ran one and three quarter laps before exiting, as instructed, and others missed out the full lap.  Also many of the distance markers were wrong.  It's a shame - it is usually a fast course. The winner was Mohammed Abu-Rezeq from Altrincham in a time of 30:39. There were 2,088 finishers.

Spire 10 - Sunday 7th July 2013 (full results)
This is a low-key, friendly race with a bottle of beer presented to all finishers. However, it’s a tough course (uphill for the first three miles), and with a small field and blisteringly hot temperatures it wasn’t a day for quick times. Only three runners dipped under the hour mark and the race was won by Julian Lings (Enfield Harriers) in a very impressive 57:11, given the conditions. First female was Mel Evans (Huncote Harriers) in 1:09:11. There were 206 finishers. The race was a counter in the Road Race Championships.
