East Hull 20 - Sunday 18th March 2012 (full results) |
Report by Dave Birch
The traditional East Hull gales were absent this year, making for ideal conditions for distance racing - damp & cool to start, warming gradually throughout the morning. The three Striders present each ran a fine race. Barry Gyte led the way with a tremendous 2:15:19 - this despite a "Paula" break en-route - and set a new club record in his age category. The marker is now set for Boston....Our two female representatives recorded satisfying performances; Linda Haley returned 2:36 at the end of a heavy training & racing period, and Nancy Stuart smashed her PB to finish in 3:12 - so both are now well-set for London. There were 403 finishers. The two race winners were both unattached runners: John Beattie won the men's race in 1:45:17and Helen Waugh won the women's race in 2:09:56.

Ashby 20 - Sunday 18th March 2012 (full results) |
Report by Louis Wood
Heavy rain and sleet lashed the car on the drive down, but mercifully it eased off shortly before the start. This meant the course was wet underfoot but conditions were otherwise ideal – cool and overcast with little or no wind. As in previous years, the race was very well organised with plenty of water, gels and jelly babies on offer, and a good quality hoodie for all finishers. The race was won by Mark Powell (Wigston Phoenix RC) in a time of 1:52:23. First woman was Claire Spencer (Kimberworth Striders) in 2:15:47. There were 844 finishers. |

South Yorkshire half marathon - Sunday 18th March 2012 (full results) |
Report by Adrian Moss
Second year of running and the field attracted 381 runners. The course is an undulating two lap route on partially closed roads but equally does involve running on pavements through the town/villages. It reminded me of the Norton 9/Bolsover 10K, certainly not like Dronfield 10K. Surprisingly it was an enjoyable course and did not suffer the boredom of some multi lap events. The organisation of the event is still developing but would I recommend it. The winner was Mark Rushbrook (unattached) in an excellent time of 1:10:28

Lad’s Leap Fell Race - Saturday 17th March 2012 (full men's results) (full women's results) |
Report by Andy Buck
Over 400 runners completed the separate men’s and women’s fell races at Lad’s Leap, the first of six counters in this year’s English Fell Race Championships. Starting from Crowden campsite in Longdendale in the Dark Peak, the race climbs steeply before a steady run to Lad’s Leap which fords a small stream, then a very boggy trod across the fell, a steep descent, steady climb back to Lad’s Leap, and fast, tricky and steep descent to finish. Many of the best fell runners in the country were among the finishers. Simon Bailey of Mercia Fell Runners won the men’s race in 44:16 and Emma Clayton of Bingley Harriers was the women’s race winner in 53:35.

Falesia 5km - Tuesday 13th March 2012 (full results) |
Report by Nick Scott
Four Striders decided to head for Portugal for some warm weather drinking. To justify the trip to wives, girlfriends, family and friends, they threw in some running which was kindly organised by Mike Gratton (1983 London Marathon winner) who runs Spring training camps on the Algarve. Whilst out there they ran a 5km race organised by training groups in the same village. Mike Savage led the Striders by chasing Paul Evans (1996 Chicago marathon winner) home. There were great performances from Nick 'I'm off to see the doc' Scott, Pete 'I'm just finishing my dissertation' Brown and Rob 'Where's the karaoke?' Booth.
The winner was Keio Kitts in a time of 15:23. There were 107 finishers. See photo below "Striders on Tour!" |

Norton 9 - Sunday 4th March 2012 (full results) |
The Striders Road Race Championship got off to a very wet start in appalling conditions at the Norton 9. Heavy rain turned to sleet by the end of the race as the temperature dropped to just two degrees. Standing water early in the race added to the fun. 13 striders were among the 341 finishers. The winners were Gareth Lowe of Clowne Road Runners in 50:03 and Stephanie Burns of Rotherham Harriers in 55:41. |

English National X-Country Championships - Saturday 25th February 2012 (full results) (see video) |
Report by Dave Beech
"If you only run one National X-Country Championships if your life, make it Parliament Hill" was the advice given to me by a fellow veteran runner in the club. And so it was that I ventured south to London for the day to compete in my first ever nationals at the wrong side of 55. With the sun shining strongly and very little wind it had the feel of a fine spring day more akin to soaking in the sun than running. The atmosphere on entering Hampstead Heath before the race is one of a big event with huge numbers of runners and spectators milling about and well over a hundred club tents and flags scattered up the main hillside giving the occasion real colour. Dave Ansell had arrived early in the day to see his daughter compete in the first race and so had bagged prime position for the Striders tent at the top of the hill with grand views over the centre of London and beyond. Each race has huge numbers in compared with local X-Country races so it was interesting watching the races leading up to the final race of the day; the mens senior race. The sight of nearly 1,700 runners lining up on a start line about 200 metres across and then heading up the hill is one to behold. In truth it was like being on holiday for the day with the race itself just a small part of it. The 12km course was two very large laps through woods and heathland, along paths and over fields. The condition underfoot was firm enough to wear trail shoes and so together with the fine weather made for a fast course. All finishers go a momento to celebrate the 125th year of this race. Keith Gerrard (Newham & Essex) won the race in a time 35:56 to add his name to the list of former winners such as Ron Hill, David Bedford, Brendan Foster and Richard Nerurkar. There were 1,688 finishers.

Yorkshire Vets X-Country Championships - Sunday 19th February 2012 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
For many Striders this was their fourth visit in two years to Northern Racing College, Doncaster for a cross country race; this time for the 2012 Yorkshire Veterans Cross Country Championships. Although blustery, the going was firm and the weather fine which was well received considering the snowy conditions of only a week or so ago. Our male vet O/50 team of Dave Ansell, Graeme Siddall and Barry Gyte came fourth in the team event which is a fine performance considering the fire-power available to many other Yorkshire clubs. In the all to score 'mob match' our male vet O/50s finished one place higher in third demonstrating an ability to compete all the way down the field although a late spate of injuries meant that we were unable to field complete teams in either the female or the male vet O/40s competitions.

Brass Monkey half marathon - Sunday 22nd January 2012 (full results) |
Report by Louis Wood
Though always very popular with local club runners, this year’s Brass Monkey nonetheless caught out many Striders by filling up in a matter of hours - not surprising as it’s one of the flattest and fastest half marathons around. However, those who managed to secure a place were probably wishing they’d missed out. Though dry and not too cold, the gale force winds that whipped across the course all the way round made it extremely hard going, especially between miles 4 and 7. The winner was Yared Hagus (Wallsend) in a superb 1:06:42, nearly five minutes ahead of second place. First woman home was Felicity Milton (Woodford Green) in 1:17:45. There were 1711 finishers. |

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships - Saturday 7th January 2012 (full results) |
Report by Ian Stinson
The Yorkshire X-Country championship saw twelve striders travel to Wakefield to take part in an event which also included the Brownlee brothers, potential Olympic hopefuls in the Triathlon event. The mens race was altered to 5 laps instead of 4 due to fallen trees on part of the course. It was a fair course but, another blustery day made the back straight particularly challenging. The Brownlee brothers had a titanic battle in front with Alistair just winning the event in 34.51. Full striders results below. Carol was the sole womens representative. Dave Parry had to withdraw from the mens race due to illness. Leeds City once again took the senior mens title with Bingley winning the ladies title. Striders came 15th out of 20 Senior Mens teams. Thanks to all those who travelled and participated.

Kent Fitness League X-Country Race, Avery Hill Park, Eltham - Sunday 2nd January 2012 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
With a visit to London planned, the choice was Sheffield Open Cross Country on the 31st December (£7.00 on the day) or guest at the Kent Fitness League (£2.00 on the day). I remember running in this league over 20 years ago before I moved to Sheffield. It was originally an informal event between some of the newer/smaller Kent clubs, intended to be less intimidating than the existing Kent League fixtures. With a field today of 411 this has become a substantial event, with a separate children's race, but the low key aspect is still maintained by imposing a cap on better athletes with 10k times of sub 34/38 minutes men/ladies who are not allowed to score. I'm not sure how much this devalues the race for the winners - the winner of this 5 mile race was Clayton Barrett in a time of 28:12 - but the standard seemed to be good enough as I could only manage 66th place.
My two quid also put me into a raffle (numerous prizes including bottles of wine) but I didn't wait to see if I'd won anything as I had a two mile run back to Sidcup and already had my spikes to carry. |
