Nine Edges Fell Race - Saturday 24th September 2011 |
A bright and mild late September morning saw a good field gather at Fairholmes Visitor Centre for this year's Nine Edges Endurance Challenge of 20 miles and some 3,000' of ascent. Whilst the walkers, climbers and some runners started as and when they arrived, the bulk of runners gathered on the bit of tarmac below Derwent Dam for a prompt 10am start. A mad dash across the field was followed by the somewhat slower climb up the steps in front of the dam wall, and after a brief respite, an equally tough and longer climb up onto Derwent Edge. These first 2-3 miles pretty much sorted the order of the field for the rest of the race. They're also the only bit of "fell" in the race - the rest is pretty much a trail run along the gritstone edges to Baslow. Steve H. had an excellent race, tussling with the leader into the last couple of km when he unfortunately succumbed to a minor stomach cramp. On this form, next year Steve should easily tidy up! The rest of us plodded along in our own little worlds, but praise must go to Adam & Kate who took this on with limited long-distance preparation, yet finished in very respectable times! The race was won by Richard Kemp in a time of 2 hours 41 minutes. There were 134 finishers. |

Stanage Struggle Fell Race - Sunday 18th September 2011 (full results) |
Another great late summer's day for this 6.1 mile 1,200' ascent fell race. A fast start soon lead to the tough climb up to Stanage, then along the top to High Neb, and downhill all the way to the finish (apart from two nasty but mercifully short climbs in the final 800 metres). DPFR runners Rob Baker (39:07) and Pippa Wilkie (46:45) took the honours. There were 321 finishers.

Wetherby 10km - Sunday 11th September 2011 (full results) |
The sight of the organisers marquee flying down the home straight pursued by a dozen or so Wetherby Runners attempting to recapture it did not auger well as the remnants of Hurricane Irene battered Britain. Chip timing with a difference today as one Strider, lurking at the back of the field at the start, learned that the chip only operated on the finish line, not the start as well if you can work that out, and spent the next few minutes shoving his way closer to the front. This, together with excessive use of the whip in the final furlong could not keep 40 minutes at bay.
The race was won by Paul Lockwoood of Wakefield in a time of 32:40 ahead of an impressive field of 927 finishers.

Asbourne half marathon - Sunday 11th September 2011 (full results) |
Report by Adrian Moss
A 153 runners took part in this race. The small field did not do the race justice, a scenic route out to Ilam and back. The undulating course, with a good climb at 7 miles and 1,080' rise is followed by flat and downhill, finishing with a loop of the park. There were drink stations every 2-3 miles. The only downside of a small field was that it doesn't give you a runner to chase to help keep the pace; I ended up running on my own for 3 miles. The highlight of the race was the barbequed real sausage 'Hot Dogs' for a £1 at the finish, together with free hot/cold drink and all for £10 entry. The winner was Paul Mannion (Ashbourne) in a time of 1:19:31

Nottingham marathon - Sunday 11th September 2011 (full results) |
The Robin Hood marathon consists of two laps. The first is quite hilly and the second mainly flat, but quite exposed in places. The runners had to contend with very strong winds for much of the time, with miles 20-24 being pretty hard. The winners were Carl Allwood (Sutton and Ashfield) in a time of 2:38:40 and Sarah Harris (Long Eaton) - 7th in the race overall - in a time of 2:47:47. There were 1,405 finishers.

Nottingham half marathon - Sunday 11th September 2011 (full results) |
This race is incorporated within the full marathon. The highlight of the day was a tremendous debut in Striders colours by recent recruit Linda Haley, who smashed her PB by 12 minutes to secure 10th female placing, and 3rd FV40. The course is not the easiest, with a few inclines to contend with, so this was a highly creditable performance. The winners were Elisha Tarus (Kenya) in a time of 1:05:52 and Chesang Dorcus (Run-Fast) in a time of 1:14:39. There were 5,513 finishers.

ExTerminator Fell Race - Sunday 4th September 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
A mild, yet drizzly day saw a 16-strong Striders contingent take on one of the toughest local races consisting over 16 miles and with around 4000' of ascent. The weather obviously didn't dampen the spirits of other runners either as the field was up to nearly 200 this year. As usual, Steve led the Striders home with an excellent 11th place, followed some time later by 3 Striders within a minute of each other. Paul had taken a "different" route out of Padley Gorge which delayed him enough for yours truly to catch up with him. He did offer jelly babies, but I did note he didn't offer one of his celebrated Jam Butties. Dean decided to open up the race by slowing down at the end, but just a bit too late for myself and Paul. James put in an excellent effort with a bulkily taped-up ankle after a bad twist on a recce, finishing with a good run around the field. Barry chose this race for his longest ever run, and despite making some innovative route choices and leading fellow runners astray, managed a fantastic time, running right up to the finish line. For his 65th birthday, Old Rog tried to celebrate by dodging death on the hills. He was met at the end by a rowdy rendition of "Happy Birthday" from the group of remaining Striders and a happy birthday banner from his family. I think most of us were completely wiped out at the end of the race, although the provided cake did help take some of the cares away. An excellent race. Are you tough enough though? The winner was John Morgan (DPFR) in a time of 2:08:05. There were 192 finishers. |

Spire 10 - Sunday 28th August 2011 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
With 850ft of climb, nearly all of it before five miles, this race was all about negative splits with an emphasis on a need to commit in the second half of the race. Coming down the hill, all I could hear behind me was the slap slap slap of somebody wearing minimalist footwear. Thinking it was Alastair Lawson, I was running scared and then somebody in black instead of yellow and green went past. The bottle of Spire 10 Celebration (right) given to all finishers was be needed to offset the delayed onset muscle soreness that arrived on Monday/Tuesday. Oliver Teasel of NDRC managed 58:47 on a blustery day with Liz Such leading the ladies home in 65:00. We all got a long sleeved t-shirt which was a useful change from the norm.

Fast flat course won by Mark Greenwood of The Army in 26:05 and Sarah Wilkinson from Morpeth in 29:03. Of the 65 finishers, 12 clocked a time under 30 minutes. Not sure about the details on the Power of 10 Rankings appearing with the results though; irritatingly incorrect although how relevant are pb's to veteran athletes?

Bradwell Fell Race - Tuesday 2nd August 2011 |
Report by Trevor Watson
A very warm evening saw a rather disappointing Striders turnout at Bradwell for what is a very well supported and fun short race.
As usual, the fast start along the main road into Bradwell drew the field out such that by the time we reached the steep climb up onto the moor race order was pretty much established. This is definitely one of the steepest climbs on the local race circuit, heading up 600' in the space of just over 1/2 mile. Once over the top though, you are treated to some great views and some nice fast running along tracks and over fell before a very fast descent of about 1 1/2 miles back to Bradwell Yours truly tussled with 2nd lady for a while inside the last mile, but she proved a little too strong in the end. Meanwhile Paul was showing a creditable performance for a fell newbie and Dean continues to show improvement every race. Great job by everyone on a night when we should have been relaxing with a beer by the pool rather than turning our lungs inside out on the hills. I know which I think is better though!. The winner was Andrew Thake (Hallamshire Harriers) in a time of 24:00. There were 122 finishers. |

Heckington 10 - Saturday 30th July 2011 (full results) |
Report by Dave Birch
What a difference 5 weeks makes. After a 1:35:54 (7:19 pace) in the heat and hills of the Mansfield Half, this was a nice flat course near Sleaford with overcast, pleasantly warm weather. The legs proved a bit less decrepit than they felt at Mansfield, carrying me to a 66:54 (6:42 pace). Enough for 1st M55, although a small field of 151 dilutes the "glory" somewhat! Checked the WAVA ratings, which came out at 77.8%, coincidentally the same as my PB set 20 years ago. Proves nowt, of course, but oddly pleasing all the same. Race winners were Matt Blunden of Sleaford in 52:04, and Philippa Taylor of Nene Valley in 62:45.

Hathersage Gala Fell Race - Monday 4th July 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
It was a warm and sticky evening for this year's Hathersage Gala fell race, but that didn't put off Striders, giving us another great turnout for a fell race. Simon Bennett turned up to make sure that Paul doesn't have it all his own way whilst Steve H is on sick leave, and a marvellous job he did too! The rest of us sweated and struggled our way around a tough but enjoyable route from Hathersage up to Over Owler Tor, then back downhill via a short, sharp climb up Higger Tor. All in all a nice evening, although would have been better just a little cooler. The winner was Stuart Bond (DPFR) in a time of 29:03. there were 243 finishers. |

Brinsworth Gala 10km - Sunday 3rd July 2011 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
This time last year we were anticipating the World Cup quarter finals but today Howard Webb swapped his red and yellow cards for a vuvuzela as he first started and then completed (45.42) this race organised to raise funds for Rotherham Hospice. Lindsay Gray of Kimberworth was first lady in 40.15 whilst Julian Lings was again busy, coming in first out of 277 finishers in 33.01 on an intestinal and hilly course. On a ferociously hot morning, the writer was pleased that 40 minutes still, if only just, remains at bay. Whilst plenty of club vests were present, club details were not included in the results so if you ran, please speak up. |
