Advertised thus: "Beat the credit crunch - 11km for the price of 10km!" This because the race had to start and finish at the castle instead of its usual point because of building work at the school.

This race was held in good weather over a very undulating course. There were 900 finishers. Striders men won first team prize!  The team was Phil Cooper, Simon Bennett and Ben Beattie.

Lancaster half marathon - Sunday 8th November 2009 (full results)

This was billed as a fast flat course, but I'm not convinced! Three quarters of the race was on trail paths, some of them very narrow and, with just under 670 runners, pretty congested, and there is a nasty little hill around 7 miles in.  Worse though after a weekend of heavy rain, was the flooded section of path - about 100 metres of muddy water 8 inches deep - that we had to wade through at 8 miles, so the remaining five and a bit miles were in sodden shoes and socks. Otherwise, a great race!

Worksop half marathon - Sunday 25th October 2009 (full results)
A lovely sunny day although a little breezy on this not flat course, a counter in the Striders Road Race Championship. The race information rattles on about how scenic Clumber Park is although some competitors did not appreciate the mile plus long drives which seemed to stretch away into infinity.

Snowdonia marathon - Saturday 24th October 2009 (full results)

Having allowed myself to be pursuaded into doing what has been described as Europe's toughest road race, it was with some trepidation that I, along with clubmate Andrew Cook (Cookie), lined up in the driving rain to catch the free bus to the start at Nant Peris. Armed with my usual list of pre-race excuses but in reality, as always, not having done enough training, we were off. After 16 miles, some beautiful scenery, up and down hills, great local support and running beside the Snowdon mountain train all seemed well. After 21 miles and with rapidly tiring legs came the sting in the tail. A two mile long 1,000 foot climb to Bwlch y Groes and with that grind of slow-motion running (with my nadir being a terrible 12 minute mile) all strength from the legs and thoughts of my desired time went out the window. A blustery off road run over the tops and a sharp descent were followed by a finish through Llanberris, some hearty local applause and the utter relief of the finish line. Cookie finished the stronger of us and high on energy gel looked a lot better than I felt. Never again, however, has already changed to a maybe....

Rowbotham's Round Rotherham - Saturday 17th October 2009 (full results)

This 80 km, 50 miles event is an undulating route through the South Yorkshire Forest. Great day out, would definitely recommend anyone who has done a marathon to give this one a go next year! Set off at 6am in the morning with headtorch and run until it nearly gets dark again. Lots of checkpoints with refreshments and jam sandwiches!

Superb sunny day with separate races for under 9s etc with seniors and vets all running together. If you ever run here, it doesn't take a spike and who said Norfolk is flat? 5km is almost before you even realise the race has started! A slight problem with the results but the organisers were only too pleased to hear from me as it sorted out a query. A good example of service recovery working to improve customer satisfaction.

Cutler's Relay - Sunday 11th October 2009 (full results)
The Cutlers Relay, traditionally an event for Universities and Colleges but now open to local running clubs, incorporated the South Yorkshire Cross Country Relay Championships and the Yorkshire Veterans Cross Country Relay Championships. This ideal opener to the cross country season provided an undulating grassland course around the open spaces of Graves Park and was held on a perfect day for racing. The male vets O/50 ran with the women in one race and the senior males, male vets O/35 and male vets O/40 all ran together in a seperate race. Striders put out three teams, their results were as follows:
