Grindleford Fell Race - Thursday 18th June 2009 |
Report by Trevor Watson
This was a lovely night for racing - dry and sunny, but not too hot.
The race starts in the playing fields in Grindleford village and then
goes uphill for over a mile onto Longshaw Estate, the latter part of the
uphill being through a marshy field, where the unwary were up to their
knees in peat bog!
After a trot through Longshaw, the route drops down and across Burbage Brook
at the top of Padley Gorge, before a very fast descent of the gorge on
the trail through the woods. This is a great place to make up time if
you are willing to commit everything on a path which is mostly strewn
with boulders!
At the bottom of Padley Gorge, the route goes right, crosses the railway
and drops into fields full of sheep (and sheep poo!) before running
alongside the river and crossing a knee-deep mud-bath between two of the
fields. The finish is a wade across the river (up to your knees to clean
off the accumulated mud), a struggle up a steep muddy bank, which
thankfully was not slippery, and a final dash across the playing fields
for a cup of squash at the finish.
This race has everything: tough uphill, peat-bog, trail, fast descent,
two water crossings and most importantly a great atmosphere. Marshalling
and general organisation were excellent too, and all for £4.
Maybe it should be a counter in next year's Club Championship?

A good 10km trail race, through Sandal Woods and round a grass playing field. The conditions underfoot were good on a mixture of grass and woodland trails; the course was flat. Good marshalling, parking and and facilities, worth the drive. |

Welsh 1000m Race (22 miles) - Saturday 6th June 2009 |
Report by Andy Buck
Torrential rain, thick cloud, gale force winds, severe wind chill - all in June! Dave Parry and I knew we were up for a challenge when the entered the Welsh 1000m race, but had not reckoned on a day of such extreme weather in the mountains. The "1000m" in the race title refers to the four 1000m summits in north Wales - two in the Carneddau range, and two on Snowdon. The race, which begins at sea level, traverses all four summits - a total distance of 22 miles, with 2,700m of ascent - and finishes on the summit of Snowdon.
We joined the class A runners event, and successfully navigated the first two summits in dire conditions. We picked up one solo runner who was heading in completely the wrong direction, and a while later a couple who were similarly disorientated. After almost four hours, at a checkpoint in the Ogwen valley, we were somewhat unceremoniously stripped of our electronic checkpoint dibbers - the end of the race for us! An ambulance, helicopter and the mountain rescue were all to be seen, evidently needed to rescue lost and very cold walkers and runners. By the end of the day, eight people were airlifted to hospital, and another 25 helped off the mountain. The race was abandoned, although a small number of the leading competitors completed the course.
We managed 12 miles so does this go on the list of unfinished business, to be attempted again in 2010? We'll see ... |

Bormes les Mimosas 10km, Var, France - Sunday 7th June 2009 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Brown
206 of us set off from the beach in the shadow of the Fort de Bregancon, the official summer retreat of the French President. The race was billed as the run "entre plages et vignobles", which it was. What they didn't say was that there was a 60 metre climb in the first 4km, and a nasty little hill just before the finish. With the temperature at the finish reaching 25 degrees the refreshments at the end were very welcome. In the UK you're lucky to get a glass of orange on the finish line, but here was a choice of still and fizzy water or Coke, and oranges, pizza, cake etc. Wow ! The only thing missing here was the wine which in the previous races I've done in France is provided in barrel loads.

Sinfin Classic 10km - Sunday 7th June 2009 (full results) |
Report by Carol Beattie What a difference the weather makes! The last time we did this race, in Elvaston Country Park near Derby, it was a boiling hot day. This year, the same weekend, the weather was foul. The start was delayed by 20 minutes, so we were drenched by the time we set off, and the course had become a series of massive puddles interspersed with boggy turns. It was one of those races where you just want to get it over - unfortunately that didn't make me run any faster! |

The Edinburgh Marathon website reported the theft of at least 6,804 bottles of water (3 Pallets) and 4,040 Lucozade Energy gels which were stolen from the route in the early hours of Sunday morning. The thefts left two out of nine water stations on the Edinburgh Marathon route without water for a period of 40 minutes between miles 15 and 21. Organisers quickly organised mobile teams of police and support vehicles in an attempt to deliver water to those who missed out.
Neil Kilgour, Race Director of Edinburgh Marathon, commented: “We are furious that someone would steal water and energy gels from marathon runners on a hot day but unfortunately that is the case. It did leave us with problems which we unreservedly apologise for but I believe we did everything we could to mitigate the problem. When it became apparent that the water supply was getting low at water station 6 we moved water from water station 7 across the road to water station 6. We also activated our distribution company who had picked up the surplus water at water station 2 (the 5.5 mile mark on Portobello Prom) and moved it to water stations 6 and 7 between Lyars Roads and Gosford House. Water was moved under police escort to get it to the stations as quickly as possible. The marathon distribution company collected around 10,000 bottles of water from other water stations at the end of the event. In collaboration with the police and emergency services we set up mobile water stations for people that missed the water at these stations and we wish to express our gratitude for their support in trying circumstances”.
Geoff Sims, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Marathon Ltd announced a £5,000 reward to anyone that gives information to police that leads to a conviction. Geoff Sims went on to say; the marathon staff spend the best part of a whole year planning a race with the aim that every runner will leave Edinburgh having had a great experience and were devastated to hear that some water stations had run out of water. Most of all our sincere apologies to all the runners that were adversely affected. We will of course be increasing our security measures in future years to ensure that this never happens again”.

One of the fastest 10k races in South Yorkshire, this was a counter in this year's club Road Race Championship. The last three of our runners recorded times were much slower than their regular times as they stopped to help one of the runners in the race who was in serious distress. |

Larwood Healthy Hearts 10km - Sunday 10th May 2009 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Brown
Well the weather was just about perfect this race which was hled to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. I think there were only 5 Striders entered - I say think 5 because some were running WITHOUT WEARING THEIR STRIDERS KIT !! A couple said it was because it was in the wash. However I think it was possibly because they'd seen my time in the Sheffield half marathon and were ashamed to be seen with me! |

Great views on an undulating trail and road course around the Derwent and Howden reservoirs. Lovely warm day, though a bit windy on exposed parts. Good support, especially at finish and a brilliant selection of cakes for all runners and walkers. The event raised over £2,500 raised for Challenge Cancer through Adventure. |

From a runner's point of view this was a disaster: A 40 minute queue to get to the park entrance, 10 more minutes to hand in the (free) parking voucher and find somewhere to park; long queues for the toilets; a 15 minute delay at the start line followed by a further 10 minute delay; a course cluttered with people, bikes, pushchairs and dogs; a narrow 2 lap course which made overtaking difficult; the leading runner finding the run in blocked by a car towing a boat; and a long queue to get out of the park and the race results published without any club names next to the runners! From a fund raiser's point so view it was excellent: 1300 runners, thousands raised for the Sheffield Children's Hospital. see website |

Photo left is of Colin West (Sheffield United) and Matt Surgeon (Sheffield Wednesday) pushing Matt (White top)
Comment by Matt Surgeon: This is Colin and I just before the start of Theo's 10km where we pushed Matt
around in his wheelchair.
Matt has MS and he was raising money for the research charity.
I thought I was going to have a heart attack on 1st loop; one of the
toughest things I have ever done. |
