Wolf's Pit Fell Race - Sunday 22nd March 2009 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
This was a new race to the fell racing calendar, conceived and organised by some chaps from Bradwell who thought it would be a spiffing idea to have people turn their lungs inside out running up to Shatton TV mast, round the moor and back down again! Although exceptionally steep in places, the course was a truly great mix of rough moorland, trail and the odd field, with plenty of places for overtaking - even from the very start. For the record, it's claimed to be 5.9 miles and 1655' of ascent. I agree on the distance, but the altimeter on my watch showed over 1800' ascent! Marshalling and organisation were fantastic with course markers all along the route, and marshalls at all of the critical points. Even the sheep made excellent spectators. A cup of tomato soup and a roll at the end finished things off very nicely, although I would have preferred minestrone. The race was only £5 to enter, which to my mind is much better value than most road races nowadays, even if it does involve a near-death experience. I highly recommend this race, but with a word of caution that it is not suitable for novices - although only 6 miles, it's a category A fell race (averaging more than 250' ascent per mile), with some extremely steep and tricky ascents and descents. |

Burnley 10km - Sunday 22nd March 2009 (full results) |
The fast downhill start and finish to this friendly 10k on the outskirts of Burnley didn't fully compensate for the fact that the bit in between was relentlessly uphill. Fantastic views of the Lancashire countryside at the top made it worth the climb |

Ashby 20 - Sunday 22nd March 2009 (full results) |
Undulating, 2-lap course with a sharp little hill up to the finish in the village. The ideal weather - not too cold, windy or sunny - and fantastic support all the way round made this a highly enjoyable race. The jelly babies and chocolate on the second 10-mile loop were particularly welcome. Warm good-quality hooded sweatshirt to all finishers too. |

Cloud Nine Hill Race - Sunday 1st March 2009 (full results) |
A well-organised romp through lovely countryside, mainly off-road on muddy paths, stony tracks, and fields, through gates and over stiles. A flat first mile, then uphill becoming very steep on rocks to summit of Cloud. Some steep, muddy downhills then gradual descent with last 2 miles mainly flat. Memorable change from all the anonymous flat, fast road races.
Good value run for £5. Excellent to have secure storage for bags as the well signed car parks were a few hundred yards away. Free soup / roll/ squash brilliant. Good atmosphere, and a decent t-shirt to buy afterwards (£8) - actually a fairly cool, minimalistic design you could actually wear out and about! |

New Chew fell race - Sunday 1st March 2009 (full results) |
This is an orienteering event that does not follow a set course - runners have to visit as many checkpoints as they can within the time limit, running across very inhospitable fells, with lots of steep climbs. I came 10th in the short score 3.5 hour event. Distance travelled (as the crow flies) 15 km. Actual distance a lot more!

Sleaford half marathon - Sunday 22nd February 2009 (full results) |
|
Traditionally used as a warm up race for thr London marathon, this race attracted just one representative from the club, Paul Embley. "It was quite entertaining with more ups and downs than should be allowable in Lincolnshire and a muddy two-mile off-road section along the Viking Way." The photo is of the mass start. |

Chernobyl 10km- Sunday 25th January 2009 (full results) |
Report by Carol Beattie
Recent heavy rain had made the canal tow paths and trail paths that make up much of the course very muddy and water-logged. That and dodging dog walkers, people on bikes and runners coming in the opposite direction may have made the times a bit slower than usual - well, that's my excuse....

Meltham 10km - Sunday 25th January 2009 (full results) |
After taking the last of my decongestants and another antibiotic capsule I started out for the 9-30 start. With a temperature of 3 degrees, snow on the hills and a gusty wind a " gentle " start saw us climb 300ft to just under 900ft at the 4 mile mark. After covering 5 miles, what a relief, a mile down hill run, and then, just when you thought it was all over, the sting in the tail is waiting, 200 meters steep to the finish. No wonder I was the only Strider, some of you had done it before and not told me that this one is definately not one for a PB ! |

Prom Classic 10k, Nice, France - Sunday 11th January 2009 (full results) |
Report by Sam Sockett
If it's a well organised, value for money, pancake flat 10k race in the winter sunshine you're after, then look no further! Run along the lovely sea front amongst the palm trees of the Promenade des Anglais, an out and back event which this year attracted the limit of 5000 runners. The start is on both carriageways with the ladies starting 5 minutes before the gents. Louise and I were hoping for good times but with a slow start and chip timing from the gun we settled for enjoying the event. The 12 euro entry included chip timing, goody bag, quality medal, Nike 'tech' fabric T shirt, fruit/cake/chocolate/water/juice/coke at the finish and great overall organisation. |

Yorkshire X-Country Championships, Kimberworth
- Saturday 10th January 2009 |
The Yorkshire X-Country was held at Kimberworth this year on a bitterly cold day. The race came on the back of 10 days of sub zero temperatures and consequently the ground was frozen solid with a shiny slippy sheen on top making it treacherous underfoot. Nevertheless Striders put out a team in both the mens race - 6 to count - and womens race - 3 to count - for the first time in a number of years. The women's team finished 19th out of the 20 clubs that managed to put out a complete team. The men finished 20th out of 21 complete teams. |
