Great North Run - Sunday 2nd October 2005 |
Report by Nick Scott
I'm a fairly new Striders member (and quite new to running!). I've been to a couple of club events but need to do more! I finished the Great North Run last week in 1 hour 29 minutes 39 seconds and finished in 461st position. It was very warm and hard work. I think I ran 14 miles with all the zig zags around runners in the first few miles. It was very busy.
It was a great day and the crowds were amazing. The finish on the front at South Shields was particularly impressive. I was sorry to hear about the tragic events for others.
I've just been given a place in the London Marathon running for NSPCC. I got involved with NSPCC becausea close friend of mine at University had suffered a childhood of abuse. It had a profound effect on him.My wifeand I have supported them for over 10 years and I'm trying hard to make my 40th year (nearly there!) benefit others. We've also been together 20 years in February 2006 and we want to do something special for children as we have been lucky to have two wonderful girls. Anyone who want to follow my progress can look at my blog at http://londonmarathon.blog.co.uk/. Anyone wanting to support me or NSPCC can do so at www.justgiving.com/nickscott. |

Penistone 10km - Saturday 10th September 2005 |
The weather was misty, damp and dank and that was when it wasn't raining; surely there can't have been a more miserable day in September. Welcome to the Penistone Show 10km! Usually the views on this hilly course are worth the entry fee but on this occasion it was difficult to pick out more than a couple of runners in front of you. Given the heavy rain in the hours before the start of the race it was perhaps no surprise that numbers were down on previous years. Four Striders competed in what was the penultimate race in the club Road Race championships. |

Askern 10 - Sunday 14th August 2005 |
Race Report by Pete Brown
Wary of the tales of horror of last years heatwave, the litre of water chilled overnight in the fridge proves unnecessary as mercifully the day dawns dull if a little blustery. Not perfect but better than the torrential rain of yesterday. Directions for the start of the race are “Askern Welfare, on the A19 Doncaster to Selby road” – except if you arrive in Askern via the A1/Campsall, how do you know which way to turn when you reach the A19? The A19 is a long road but luckily enough time has been allowedfor the journey.
As usual, thewarm up is over the last half mile of the race. There's an awkward dogleg fifteen metres before the line - whoever gets there first wins. Also noted that this is where the locals bring their dogs to shit. Don't want to get the racingflats mucky but won't be bothered about that in an hour or so time.
As the initial pecking order sorts itself out, for the first mile the field breaks into little groups. There's a group of about eight or nine of us, each unwilling to take it on as we work hardinto the wind. A fast start, but not fast enough for some as two Yorkshire lasses from City of Leeds and Valley Striders go past. The leading lady herself is further on so you know that they are after her so, the perfect gentleman that your author is, he tucksin behind them enjoying the tow. Scunthorpe stalwart Dave Grayson who is following the race on his bike isn’t that impressed but his suggestion that the men should share some of the work falls upon deaf ears. The first hill around three miles seesthe Leeds woman droppingus both. She actuallygoes on to win the race in 59.41 – should have kept up with her!
There’s a sharp bend at five miles which allows a view of who is behind. Fellow Strider Colin West had been seen at the start and I had been expecting him to arrive on the shoulderat any moment. Something must be wrong as he had stuffed everyonedoing 1000 metres reps on the previous Monday. The turn at five miles also brings some relief from the wind but it can’t be that strong as a 5.30 mile ensues – the mile markers must be in the wrong place.
The last couple of miles bring the usual, futile, chase for the line. Can you catch the Valley Striders woman who had got away at three miles? Who’s thatcharging past – obviously hadn’t been working hard enough earlier in the race. Mangaged to getthe tri-athlete to take iton a bit into the wind. Why has that bloke from Spen stopped in his tracks with only half a mile to go?
The finish around the perimeter of the cricket pitch brings an unwanted sprint for the line and, eventually,a chance to stop for a chat. Colin had his car broken into last night and his stereo nicked – he did well to run today at all. Why isn’t Simon Wiles running in a club vest? The Leeds woman asks who the bloke on the bike was as she doesn’t need to be paced.
Warm down and a little gentle stretching before a tired drive home. Getting lost again there are still runners on the course but it'suseful to see a road race from the motorist’s point of view.
Results: Clicking on the Norton Nine results by mistake, scaremyself to death when I read that the bloke from Rotherham ran under 55 minutes!
First man: A Caine of Tynedale, 51.08; First woman: G Keddie of Leeds City 59.41; 339 finishers |

Results of Graves Park 6 - Wednesday 6th July 2005 (part of Striders Week of Events) |
Report by Roger Stevenson
On a typical mid-summer evening (cold and windy, with a threat of a shower) 23 runners set off on a devilishly devised course of 2 laps of the paths of Graves Park, a total of approximately 6 miles. Such was the severity of the course that two runners dropped out. |

Eyam Half Marathon - Sunday 15th May 2005 |
On a nice clear Sunday morning some striders turned up to run the Eyam half. Hill climbs, beautiful countryside and some serious hill declines. A well organised race brought the striders through this gruelling race. |

Rother Valley 10km - Saturday 14th May 2005 |
This was a counter in the 2005 club road race championships. The course was two laps of the path around the main lakes. The weather was hot and dry and with the wind blowing up the dust from the paths it made conditions uncomfortable for the competitors. See pictures of Striders in this race>> |

Norton 9 - Sunday 6th March 2005 |
The alternative to Sheffield's Lords Mayors 10k race was held near Doncaster on the same day. The Norton 9, an excellent event run on quiet country roads with very few turns, was the first counter in the 2005 Striders Road Race Championships. The weather was ideal for road racing: hazy sunshine and not too warm. |

National X-Country Championships, Birmingham - Saturday 19th February 2005 |
Report By Dave Birch
Undeterred by the lowly team placing in the Yorkshire Championship earlier in the month, a group of Striders travelled in good heart to Birmingham. Despite the absence of Chris Ward, who was attending some trivial sporting event in North London (a Sheffield United match?), Mike Wornes was able to assemble the necessary six good men and hence ensure a Striders presence in the National once again. The course was 3 undulating laps of four kilometres, and was over mainly grassy parkland, with just a couple of muddy areas. The worst of these was unfortunately on the steepest part of the course, but overall the going wasn't quite as testing as Skipton. Nevertheless, 12k over grass isn't for the faint-hearted, especially in bitterly cold conditions, but the Striders team were not found wanting. Strengthened by the return of Chris Driskell, a fine 86th place was attained from 102 complete teams to finish. Sixteen teams were therefore routed by Striders, which is sixteen more than at the Yorkshires!!
I must emphasise what a great occasion the National is. The venue is inevitably inspiring, and the huge fields ensure a dramatic spectacle. There are ten races in all across the age and gender groups; there were 3,694 finishers in total, with 1,316 in the Senior Men's and 451 in the Senior Women's races. To those Striders who haven't tried cross-country I would recommend having a go in the South Yorkshire League, and then you can have a crack at the National. Wouldn't it be good to have a women's team in addition to the men next year? (Only 4 needed to count). Go on - give it a try! |

North of England Cross Country Championships , Consett - Saturday 29th January 2005 |
Report by Club Captain Michael Wornes
Unfortunately due to last minute illness and injury problems, Striders were unable to send a full team to these Championships. However two Striders decided to make the journey north.
It turned out to be a very rewarding and satisfying day out. Sun and blue skies greeted us, and it was very mild considering the recent cold spell and the location.
The course appeared to be laid out on a large area of rough spare land and consisted of 4 even laps which were mainly flat but with one short, but steep hill included. The distance was approximately 9km.
To say there was seven other races before ours, the grass remained remarkably firm and provided a generally good running surface. There were plenty of places where you could get your foot down and go for it!
Such was the quality of the field that Dave and myself were both lapped by the leading runners half round our 3rd lap!
However, we both put in good, solid performances and I am sure that if we had had a full team we would have definitely improved on our placing at the recent Yorkshire X– Country Championships.
K. Farrow of Derby A.C. won the race in 39 minutes 43 seconds; the winning team was from Leeds City A.C. |

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships, Skipton - Saturday 15th January 2005 |
Report By Dave Birch
Thanks to the sterling work of team captain Michael Wornes, Striders were able to enter a team in this prestigious championship race. The course was over one medium and two large laps of parkland and agricultural terrain, and contained some serious hills. The distance was 11.2km (exactly 7 miles in old money), and the senior men's race was the last of the day, after the junior runners and senior women had nicely churned up the course. Just over 200 runners started, and when it was all over, Striders were placed 21st from 21 complete teams to finish; Bingley won the race. It is fair to say, however, that the average age of the Striders team must have been the highest in the race (the photograph in the Yorkshire Post of the leading pack shows athletes young enough to be the sons of at least four of our team)! More importantly, Striders continue to be represented at a wider level than just our local area, so again full credit to Michael for his efforts in putting the team together. |
