Percy Pud 10km : 2008 Race Report
Sunday 7th December 2008

Philip Hoole (Rotherham) won the 2008 Percy Pud 10km road race. Hoole and last year's winner Andy Thake (Hallamshire) drew clear of the field of almost 1,500 with Hoole proving stronger to win by 10 seconds in a time of 31:31. See xsfotoevents for full photo gallery of race.

Thake made a determined effort to retain his title, forcing the early pace. At the halfway stage he had a 10 second lead but Hoole made up the deficit and went ahead at the 6km mark. Thake could not respond although the Rotherham man was never able to make the break decisive and Thake was always in with a chance until the final stages.

Conditions, although cold, were good and Hoole was only 10 seconds outside his best for the distance which he set in Nottingham a year ago.

Thake, although lacking race fitness, was only 12 seconds outside his best of 31:29 set when winning last year's Percy Pud, which is organised by Steel City Striders.

Nick Swift (Sheffield Running Club) was third in 32:31, well inside his previous best whilst top veteran, Simon Wright (Doncaster) finished a splendid fifth.

Further down the field came local MP Richard Caborn, finishing in a highly creditable time of 56:47, and he, like all competitors, was rewarded with a well-earned Christmas Pudding.

Debbie Richards (Sheffield Running Club) was the leading women in 37:54. She finished 60th overall, well clear of runner up Jacqui Dews (Holmfirth) and her time of 37:54 was more than a minute faster than her previous best set in the Lord Mayor's 10K in March this year.
